Henry George Hammond

This is the personal account of a pre war soldier who was called up for service during the Second World War. The account begins with the story about his pre war service. Henry Hammond describes his time with Phantom. Sergeant Hammond joined No.3 Military and Air Mission on 2 March 1940. He returned to England and rejoined the unit which was renamed No.1 GHQ Reconnaissance Unit. Hammond was sent with a detachment to Greece. He was one of only nine who evaded capture. His service with Phantom continued and by then renamed GHQ Liaison Regiment. On his request Hammond left Phantom and served in a fighting unit. This personal account is a unique insight into one man’s pre war background, service in Phantom and the rest of his war service with other units. The account is very much Hammond’s account, but the editor has added some footnotes and corrected a couple of typos here and there. The editor must thank Henry Hammond’s son for allowing him to read, edit and publish this account.
