SAS Phantom
Asher is working on the history of SAS Phantom or 'F' Squadron GHQ Liaison Regiment during the North West Europe campaign. The Squadron was given the special role of providing patrols which were deployed on operations with the SAS Brigade and also acted as a Brigade Signals Section.
'F' Squadron’s future until early 1944 was uncertain. During Exercise Eagle in February 1944, it was finally agreed that the Squadron had an interesting future. The Squadron was asked to volunteer for parachuting. Maj. Hon. J J Astor was informed by Col. 'Sandy' McIntosh TD that their role with 1 Corps had ceased and their new role was to improvise as a Brigade Signals Section for the Special Air Service Brigade. It was recorded in the Phantom War Diary that 83% of the Squadron volunteered.
If you have any documents/photographs or information about the Squadron's role in North West Europe 1944-45, please would you get in touch with Asher.
